Dort, the Dort Packet Boat from Rotterdam Bacalmed |
From Yale University Art Gallery:
In 1818, after his first visit to the Netherlands, Joseph Mallord William Turner exhibited “Dort of Dordrecht: The Dort Packet-Boat from Rotterdam Becalmed” (1818) at the Royal Academy in London. Described by one critic in 1818 as “one of the most magnificent pictures ever exhibited,” “Dort” generated both critical acclaim and controversy. Gillian Forrester, Senior Curator of Prints and Drawings, Yale Center for British Art, focuses on this multifaceted painting and explores its critical reception, Turner’s complex relationship with Dutch Old Master painters, and his engagement with contemporary artistic politics.
